What is missions? The word “mission” is derived from the Latin word “mittere,” which means “to send.”
The purpose of missions is to fulfill the “great commission,” reaching beyond the needs of the local congregation. The goal is to share the wonderful gospel of Jesus Christ, making disciples of those who receive salvation. The first declaration of the “great commission” was in Genesis 12:1-3. This commission was restated in Isaiah 49:6 and in the New Testament: Matthew 28:18-20, Mark 16:15-18, John 20:21, Acts 1:8 and Romans 1:16.
Why do we have a Missions Focus at Christian Heritage Ministries? Missions is the reason why our churches exist. Missions is not merely a part of the agenda of the church. Missions is THE AGENDA. The heartbeat of God is the souls of people everywhere. The foundation of Christian Heritage Ministries is missions. Our Good News Club that was held every Friday in the 1980's was focused on the souls of over 140 children. Held in a three story brownstone house in the Crown Heights and Bedford Stuyvesant areas of Brooklyn, this Club taught and reinforced the love of Jesus Christ, leading to the salvation of many. Some have continued to serve Christ in our local churches and elsewhere.
Our vision, outreach and commitment to missions have been renewed. Yearly short term local mission and foreign trips and previous trips to the West Indies, West Africa, Mexico and South America will be resumed. We continue to serve locally in the Crossroads Youth Detention Center, Nursing Home, and Shelter Ministries. We aim to continue to increase the mission momentum, while we believe God for his financial provision. It is our desire to pour vision into the hearts and lives of people, especially the vision of the Great Commission. We must teach them to believe our Lord Jesus Christ’s passion and commandment to “go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature.” The flags displayed in our sanctuary make the great statement that either we have already begun to invest in the souls of people in these countries or we desire to do so. We do not take this investment lightly, we are builders of God’s Kingdom, sharing that Christ’s love can change lives.
The missions committee of Christian Heritage Ministries is comprised of loyal pastors and church members who have demonstrated a heart for missions and a commitment to different aspects of missions. We firmly believe in accountability, integrity and credibility regarding the use of all funds collected. Our biggest challenge is often not being able to meet our goals to contribute to the designated needs. Our Mission of Hope to the community is a response to the Great Commission. We share the gospel of Christ as we try to meet physical needs by providing over 100 supplemental bags of food every Thursday. We also continue to provide pro-bono legal advice as needed. Prayerfully, in the near future we will be able to again provide the much needed GED classes for those who desire to have a high school equivalency diploma, and resume the English as a second language (ESL) classes.
Thanks to all who have participated in this journey of reaching out to the lost, those who remain in darkness, where we once were, until someone shared Christ’s love. Let us give back in response to what we have received and please our God today and always.
